Sock-O-Rama KAL/CAL!

5 Aug

Well, the time is here!!!  At 5pm EST the Saco River Yarns sock KAL/CAL will begin.   This is a product of the interesting and inspiring conversations we have every Tuesday night when we gather at the shop from 5-8pm.  If you are in the Biddeford area on a Tuesday night, we would LOVE to have you join us.

For those of you who would like to participate with us but cannot make Tuesday night’s kick-off or maybe you are not local but would like to join anyway, here is the link for the pattern we will be using.  It was kindly donated to us by Lois and modeled below:

And of course, to encourage maximum participation and lots of happy tootsies, all sock yarn and circular sock needles sizes 0-2 will be 15% off beginning Tuesday, August 6 at 5pm EST through Saturday, August 10 at 2pm.  Even if you are not joining us but would like to take advantage of this sale you are welcome to do so.  We just received Lang yarns in Magic and Mille Colori, Berroco Sox in new colorways in addition to the Noro Taiyo sock, Berroco Sox, and Suripaco’s Springvale sock yarn already in stock.  We have 16″ and 24″ circular needles to knit socks on two circulars (we recommend using needles of two different lengths).  Copies of the pattern will be available in the shop as well.

Our sock pattern begins with an eastern cast-on, also called a Turkish cast-on.  Here is a video showing how it’s done on two circular needles.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

3 Aug

A few years ago, when Saco River Yarns was just a twinkle in my eye, I met my friend, Patti at a Park & Ride and embarked on a day long fiber field trip.

Our destination, on that hot summer day, was Swans Island Blankets for a tour of their weaving facility and dyehouse.  The building is a beautiful cedar shingled cape located in Lincolnville, just on the other side of Camden.  It was a very hot day but I was smitten with the beauty that was the outside and the inside of this building.  I photographed my visit there but never published those pictures.  So let me take you on my tour of Swans Island Blankets and Yarns.  Enjoy!
